Glasgow’s Soosh makes a lovely debut with a blend of juicy downbeat HipHop and pastoral melodic memes on a self-titled EP for the Jumble imprint. He introduces himself with ‘Rainbow Hiccups’, a bit of tender, post-BoC IDM with hazy nods to the current LA sound. ‘Bayan’ stays slow and woozy, weaving blues and choral samples with a gently lapping HipHop downstroke, while ‘Fragments Remain’ sounds like a quasi-speed Sepalchure. Our highlight has to be the low-gravity head nodder ‘Bramhall Waits’, or the smudged crystalline gleam of ‘Missed You Tonight’. On remix duties, Lapalux follows his debut on the hotly touted Pictures label with a dreamily detailed and entirely complementary rebuild of ‘Rainbow Hiccups’.
Absolutely amazing EP. The beat scenes always been international, but I can dig the influences in the sound - as varied as a CoCoRosie sample to an Indian mantra. And that Lapalux remix of “Rainbow Hiccups”…wow!
